Guest Speaker

Today Derek Handley came to talk to the fourth grade students about his disability.  He has been in a wheelchair for 13 years and came to talk to us about assumptions that some people have made about him since then and experiences he has had with people making prejudgements about him.  He told us some stories about how people treat him and about what is it like to get around in a wheelchair.  Mr. Handly is in a wheelchair because of an accident that injured a part of his spine.

What did you think about this visit?  How did it impact you?

Guest Speakers

So far we've had to two guest speakers come to visit us this week.  Mrs. Coffey came to speak to us about her nephew who has Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.  We learned that as a young boy, he could run and play but as he got older, his muscles got weaker.  He is now 25 years old and in a wheelchair, able to move only his head and finger.  Mrs. Coffey talked to us about some of the prejudgements that her nephew has experienced in his life and the ways that this has made him feel.  Mrs. Coffey's nephew is an artist and writer.  We looked at some of his work from his art exhibition.

What did you think about this visit?  How did it impact you?

Our second visitor this week was Ms. Wilcox.  She came to speak to us about work she has done in the UK with people who have disabilities.  She reminded us that everything we do can be adapted so that people who have disabilities can also do it in some way.

What did you think about the work that Ms. Wilcox has done with people who have disabilities?  How did hearing the stories about these people impact you?

Fractions!

We have begun learning about fractions in our math lessons!  We've tried to identify how we use fractions in the real world.  Sometimes we can use fractions to share food, like parts of a pizza!  Sometimes we can use fractions when we're shopping, like if there is a sale and things are half off!  Sometimes we use fractions when we're cooking, like adding 1/3 a cup of sugar!  We've also talked about fractions of a group of things, like 1/2 our class, or 1/4 of our potato chips! Fractions are all around us in the real world.

When else do you use fractions in your life??
