Our Unit: How We Express Ourselves

We've been talking a lot about our first unit: How We Express Ourselves.

This unit, our central idea is "Language helps us synthesize ideas and information and leads us to new understandings".

We have been "unpacking" our central idea and lines of inquiry by breaking them into smaller pieces and trying to figure out what they mean.  We have changed the central idea into kid friendly language so that we can better understand it, and we have even translated it into our mother tongue!

We have looked at our lines of inquiry, how prerspectives lead to different interpretations and the ways in which literature opens us up to different experiences.  We started a class mind map about different ideas this gave us and connections we were making.

Some of the things we came up with were:
  • Other people's ideas can help us to expand our own ideas.
  • People have different points of view of the same story.
  • Books carry knowledge within them.
  • Reading and thinking is how we learn.
  • Reading can change us and our ideas.
What other thoughts do you have about our central idea and lines of inquiry?
