Who We Are Unit Wonderings

We've been talking a lot of prejudgements and disabilities this week for our Who We Are unit.  We've also had two guest speakers visit the fourth grade, Mrs. Haesler and Mr. Phil.  Mrs. Haesler came to talk about an illness that she got as a teenager, polio.  Because of the way that it affected her body, she told us that she has difficulty walking and using certain parts of her body, like her left arm.  She talked to us about how this has affected her life.  Mr. Phil came to talk to us about work he has done with children with disabilities in the past.  These guest speakers, class discussions, and some videos we have watched have all helped to foster a lot of discussion within our classroom.  They have also helped to get us thinking about questions we have about this unit and our unit wonderings.  Asking questions helps us to begin our own inquiries so that we can investigate and find the answers to our wonderings.  Take a look at some of the things that 4.2 students are wondering:

  1. Youri talks about this unit every day at home.
He seems really intrested and involved how people with disabilities "survive" in this world.
Every day he has learned something different.
Maybe it is because he has a sister with diabetes which effect our lifes as well.
    Good luck with this unit.
